Semtech’s HL7900 5G LPWA module certified by US carriers
Semtech, a semiconductor, Internet of Things (IoT) systems, and cloud connectivity service provider, has announced the certification of the HL7900 Global 5G LPWA module by three United States (U.S.) carriers – AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon – as well as KDDI in Japan.
The module has also achieved global regulatory certifications, including FCC (USA), ISED (Canada), CE (Europe), JRF/JPA (Japan) and NCC (Taiwan), as well as PTCRB and GCF industry certifications for global carrier interoperability, making it a premier, global deployable solution for low-power Internet of Things (IoT) applications. “These certifications represent a milestone for the HL7900 module and reinforce Semtech’s leadership in IoT innovation,” said Michael Buonassisi, the director of the LPWA modules at Semtech. “This carrier interoperability not only enhances the HL7900’s appeal for global IoT deployments by ensuring reliable, low-power connectivity across key markets, but also enables our customers to scale their solutions with confidence and streamline their path to success.”
HL7900: Innovative support for intelligent operations
The HL7900, powered by Sony’s Altair ALT1350 chipset, delivers optimised performance for next-generation IoT applications with low-power consumption and extended coverage needs. Compared to earlier models, it reduces power consumption by up to 80%, enabling longer, more reliable operation for battery-powered IoT devices.
Key innovations include:
- An ultra-low-power sensor hub Micro Controller Unit (MCU) that can track environmental conditions from connected sensors such as accelerometers or temperature sensors, triggering the system only when specific thresholds are reached to maximise energy efficiency.
- An integrated sub-GHz and 2.4GHz radio supporting short-range protocols such as Wi-SUN and U-Bus Air, streamlining IoT designs and lowering costs by integrating cellular and short-range wireless into one solution.
- An integrated Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receiver and optional Wi-Fi scanning provides reliable indoor and outdoor tracking for applications such as asset management and urban navigation.
- A future-proof platform with expected software updates to support 3GPP releases 15, 16, and 17, including NB-IoT over Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN), enabling connectivity even in areas without terrestrial networks for true global reach.
Simplifying deployment
Semtech further simplifies IoT development with end-to-end solutions, including an optional embedded SIM for instant Smart Connectivity access, integrated edge-to-cloud security and secure over-the-air updates. This consolidated approach reduces operational complexity and total cost of ownership. The HL7900 is now commercially available. Semtech is actively pursuing additional carrier certifications around the world to further broaden the HL7900’s global reach. For more information on the HL7900, please click here.
